Lefkosa (Nicosia)
Lefkosa is the capital of the TRNC and, founded during the Lusignan period, is one of the oldest towns on the island. Lefkosa's surrounding walls were built in 1567 by the Venetians to defend the city against the Turks. Entirely enclosing the city, the thick walls were built high and incorporated 11 defence towers. Lefkosa's monuments, testimony to the richness and fame of the city, date from the Middle Ages and later periods. There are fine examples of Gothic and Ottoman architectural styles. The 300 year period of Turkish rule has left its legacy in Lefkosa, as in other towns of the island.
